Over 600,000 objects of Native American + Western artifacts are housed in this 100,000 SF state-of-the-art Research Center in Burbank. • In 2010, the Autry began the ambitious endeavor to bring together the stellar collections of the Autry and the Southwest Museum of the American Indian under one roof. • 100,000-square-foot collections care, research, and education facility located in Burbank. • Center houses the finest collection of Western art and material culture in the American West, and possibly, the world – objects, art, and materials numbering more than 600,000 items. • Includes the second largest collection of Native American objects in the United States – second only to the Smithsonian. • The Resources Center is certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) with a level Gold rating recognizing the museum’s efforts to construct and outfit the facility in an environmentally sensitive manner. Introduction and Highlights • The linchpin for the Autry’s continued growth and its transformative vision to tell the stories of the past as illuminated through the lenses of all peoples of the American Southwest, while celebrating the West as it is today – rich in diversity and interpreted through art, culture, interactive media, and objects. • Follows the lead of other institutions, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, which house their collections offsite in state-of-the- art facilities with similar features, research capacities to expand accessibility, and knowledge about their collections. • Unites the collection and libraries of the Autry and the historic Southwest Museum of the American Indian, as well as collections management, conservation, and libraries and archives staff, into one facility – making our materials accessible for present and future generations. Key Features • A Native American-designed ceremonial garden and adjacent tribal consultation room. • A library suite, which houses the Autry’s two libraries, workspaces for researchers and educators, reading and viewing rooms, and workrooms for staff librarians. • An archaeological study room for archaeologists, researchers, and students to access the collections. • Basketry storage room includes over 14,000 Native American baskets, including some from Latin and Spanish Colonial cultures. • A photograph and film cold storage room with specialized temperature and humidity controls to reduce the rate of deterioration and extend the longevity of photographic media. • Storage rooms for: Iconic Hollywood costumes; Saddles, featuring a mechanized system for storing, accessing, and preserving the saddle collection; Rare firearms, jewelry, and other valuable materials.
