Willow Glen Library

Join us for the 2nd installment of “Crafting Our Future” as we explore a different kind of science fiction: AI behavioral rulebooks. We will read excerpts from Anthropic’s Claude’s Constitution and OpenAI’s Model Spec as stories that imagine how an AI system should work, what kind of interactions with end users the system expects, and when it should refuse a request. “Inventing the Rules of AI” will host Dr. Nada Madkour, Director of the AI Security Initiative at UC Berkeley’s Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity. Dr. Madkour is an expert in writing and evaluating frameworks that govern how emerging technologies are safely and securely designed, implemented, deployed, and maintained. Dr. Madkour will guide us through the key security and privacy challenges unique to AI systems, from data protection to companionship and manipulation. We’ll spend time imagining what rules and behaviors we would write for emerging technologies after considering the aspirations for the system imagined in the behavioral rules written by frontier AI companies. As with every session in the series, we turn from reading and learning to crafting our individual and collective visions for the future through quilting, drawing or writing. Individual contributions will be collected and turned into a vibrant patchwork exhibit. Don't miss this chance to help craft a tangible representation of the future we envision and what emerging technologies should look like for our community in San José and beyond. Registration is required. Light snacks will be provided. Dr. Sarah Papazoglakis is the Library’s Technologist-in-Residence. She is a humanist and technologist who holds a PhD in Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has dedicated almost a decade to designing ethical frameworks for building technology responsibly, emphasizing how storytelling and fiction are common foundations of both literature and emerging technologies like AI. “Crafting Our Future” is a year-long community conversation series that will foster thoughtful discussions around emerging technologies using texts, film, and art as a shared point of reference.
